Rhodes always comes up trumps. A popular resort in the South-East Aegean with bundles of hospitality and great beaches. Then there's the spacious accommodation.....delightful.

This is the bizarrely-named Pefkos Beach Hotel, which, naturally, is nowhere near the beach, but has great facilities and the best mojitos in town (according to Costas). Three pools and a roof-top restaurant, plenty of games for the kids, crazy karaoke (not my bag normally) but hilarious here and quiz nights.

Summertime in Pefkos

Temperatures can easily hit 35 to 40 in August, so think carefully about taking children into that heat. Also, alcohol & the sun are incompatible, so take it easy. Cocktails, Stowford Press & cold lagers are extremely popular!

Bar Life

Take it easy. Take everything easy.

Relax. Chill out. Costas will mix any cocktail you fancy, from mojitos to margaritas. Football & tennis mad, he’ll chat to anyone about any subject. Beware! He’s a philosopher and very witty.

Pefkos Beach Hotel caters for all ages & types of holiday. Groups of young people, couples, families and many return guests. Rooms are very spacious, clean and comfortable. The Palm Cocktail Bar by the main road is extremely popular, even with visitors strolling past.

But, back to the Pool Bar, where Jim’s ordering his nightly wee dram of scotch. He loves the place.

Breakfast

After a night out, you’ll need picking up in the morning. Who better to cheer you up than Christos & his brekkie team!

If you order beans on toast, you’ll probably get eggs. If tea, you’ll get apple juice. It’s the whisky, you see.

He’s been here for many years & the kids and returners love him. He does double shifts and works as a waiter from 6 in the evening at the restaurant, Nostalgia. Mad.

When you return to your rooms from a day out, you’ll be presented with this scenario. Yep.

The cleaners are also very creative with the towels. Elephants and birds are de rigeur. Tip them. They’ll look after you.

Tsambiko Bakery & Taverna

If you can handle the climb up the hill - it’s only two hundred yards! - you’ll get a fantastic meal & fantastic views. The music, however, is absolute shite. We usually pop in. Went in once on the last night of the season. Awesome grub.

Their bakery and shop is just as splendid. Cakes and buns everywhere. Here’s their sunset.

Cavos Mare

At the eastern end of the main beach is a small cove, where you’ll find a lovely taverna. The views are awesome as are the sunsets. It’s now an Italian restaurant with an excellent reputation. Same views. Check them out below.

There are always boats mooring, which make for a nice photo. You can get equally spectacular results from the Taverna Philosophia above the main beach and the Waves Restaurant (Kyma) down near the beach.

Autumn in Pefkos

Ever wondered what it’s like in Greece as summer comes to an end? You never know. Sometimes the weather stays true well into November. At other times it just collapses.

Here are some images from the end of season as the storm-clouds gather.

Frantic efforts are made to baton down the hatches before the rain comes. Even the Chef joins in!

All hands on deck!

The chef is joined by Costas Mingo, who looks after the main bar area. He’s one of the three brothers who manage the hotel now. Phillip & Mike do the restaurant in the evenings. All of the family take turns to work in their supermarket next door. You’re get a sincere and warm welcome from all of them. Costas is also a top fisherman.

When it rains, it pours!

Costas gets an unscheduled early shower!

So, time for something to warm you up in cool Pefkos. Cognac & an Irish coffee (with Metaxa, of course).
