The Senegalese Sex Tapes

Raw Sects fully embraced the wonders of new technology and and melded them to their unique mix of analogue instrumentation. Of course, everyone’s doing it now (see the Tea Street Band for an example of a high-quality paradigm). But then there were many trying and some in the trip-hop genre having a right go.

Here was a full-on assault on sampling meets real guitars. No limits. Nor on the subject-matter. If most magazine sample CDs seemed to contain nothing but grunts and groans (female) for their readers, then this bunch must have been dying to take it all a stage further.

They were great fun. Never knew where the sexism started or the feminism ended. Lunchtimes at the pub went on for hours / days / weeks. Delete as necessary.

Here’s a glimpse of their audio artistry.

[1997]
They weren’t prolific but were more interested in finer detail and a finished sound. Probably produced enough material for a couple of EPs.

There was some great stuff, such as ‘Shaven Ravers’ with its nod to the Performance-pornster, Annie Sprinkle, and a blistering guitar duel at the close. One thing’s for certain. Radio play would have been tricky with their titles. The comic sci-fi tale of ‘Invasion Of The Frog-Fuckers’ for instance would have been problematic. I love the idea of all the global dignitaries assembling to greet the first aliens to visit earth, only to discover they are minute and barely visible……and are purely interested in sex with frogs. Wild.

They produced a variety of mixes for both ‘Pigshit’ above and for ‘Club Sex.’ That was a sure-fire club hit. It was known to the band as ‘Get Up And Dance (Fuck).’

They should have been huge. The tabloids would have loved them, as in HATE.
