Elounda - Who put that beach there?
If you read about Elounda in the other post, then you'll know it's an attractive harbour-village, picture postcard type, with NO beach. There is a spectacular lagoon off the harbour separating Elounda from a peninsular opposite and Spinalonga island (the home of the lepers) to the left of the harbour.
The lagoon is a bit scary - it's deep - noone knows how much (a bit like the inner harbour in Ag Nik). It's full of weird sea-creatures and none of us liked swimming in it much, which was irrational, I suppose.
Mid-90s and we're back to explore the latest version of Elounda. It's bad news.
The bus terminal is now a huge area for several coaches and there's accommodation right along the harbour road heading off to Plaka. But also, there's a BEACH !!
Who put that fucking thing there?!!! Right on the lagoon! No gently-sloping thing this for the toddler. Beach stops and you're right in, no seabed, with over 50 fathoms of what?!! Scary.
Sunbeds everywhere and wasps all over the orange-juice machines in every bar! Nuts. This was a nature reserve, basically, which has attempted commercialism. Bizarre.
Now in August there is a Beach Party, as part of a festival. The organisers probably wouldn't know any different!
Elounda had sold its soul and thrown in the knickers too!
