The Argolid

Giant walls of cyclopean masonry, so big that they must have been built by the Cyclops!

Welcome to the Argolid, of Argos, Tiryns, Mycenae, Corinth and Epidauros.

Then there’s the magnificent port and former Capital, Nauplion. The three day tour (including hotel) is worth considering.

Most visitors explore Mycenae, with its huge ramparts and enormous tombs from the Bronze Age.

If you get a chance, visit Nauplion. There’s a castle perched precariously above the town. It has excellent walks , beaches and strange unexpected vistas everywhere. Why it’s not a major tourist destination I don’t know. It looks pretty upmarket these days. There’s even an annual race to the castle. Check it out.

The theatre of Epidauros is one of the best surviving monuments from the ancient world and is still used for performances.

Here are some views of the theatre.

To reach the Peloponnese you need to cross the Corinth Canal, which in itself is worth a stopover. You may get a glimpse of a ship passing through too. Some engineering achievement that!
