Fish Taverna At Sfinari

I have already described some aspects of the lunch at Phidias’ Fish Taverna, but here are some photos of what usually happens when you arrive. You can see the tables decked out under the shady trees. Many locals and tourists drive down to enjoy lunch at one of the tavernas there. The beach is quite rough but you go there to indulge the senses, not for activity. The fish are weighed. You can see the fish held by a line for handling - mainly the whoppers. The scales provide an accurate weight so you can decide what to purchase. Fish has always been expensive, but it’s not at all silly prices!

I thought our hosts provided great hospitality and were not in the habit of fleecing customers. Nice.

Fish having been selected and cooked, it was time to be seated and enjoy the fare. We had opted for a variety (again great advice from Yiannis, our guide). Skaros, Sarpa and the much-loved Barbounia were our choices for the day. If you don’t try, you’ll never know. Salad, dips and various sides were provided, along with wine, water and bread. If you haven’t feasted enough, out comes the free dessert, loukoumades, a bucketload of them, and, of course, bottles of raki for the brain-freeze. Cretans don’t seem to require MDMA just yet! Astounding.

Here is a nice binary. Before and after. Plates emptied by satisfied punters.

As you can see, there are plenty of sun-beds for people to use on the beach if they wish.

Why move from the table, especially if you have your own chauffeur ?
